A Day in the Life

We are now in Daleville Virginia, sitting at a Wendy's eating frosties after each eating a little Caesars pizza for lunch. Since we posted last in Pearisburg we've walked 93 some-odd miles. Our pace has quickened considerably, we've been consistently hiking around 22 miles a day.

Not much has happened other than us passing over McAfee knob, the most photographed spot on the AT. The views there were phenomenal plus there was a large rock overhang to dangle your feet off. The guy in red or tan in several of the pictures is White Flash who has been hiking with us for the past 150 or so miles. We hiked with him a lot earlier until I got sick, but then he got off for a wedding, so we encountered him again.
As the title indicated, here is a rough idea of what happens through the course of an average day.
6-6:30 am- wake up from a whippoorwill or an early riser packing up
6:30-7:30 pack, eat breakfast( honey bun and pop tarts, no cooking or oatmeal as it takes too long), brush teeth, floss, and stretch.
7:30- start hiking
9:00-snack, sweet and salty bars or cereal bars. Switch hat for bandana, morning restroom break.
10-snack more
11-more food and walking.
12-1 pm- lunch: bagel with peanut butter, apple, tuna fish with olive oil, and candy.
1pm on: walk with frequent snacking.
5-6pm- stop at shelter or water source and camp, set up tent/sleeping stuff, look at topography for tomorrow, lament my extreme soreness, make a crystal light, lay down and relax to music (lately Simon and Garfunkel).
7- eat dinner: instant potatoes or rice with more tuna and some sort of dessert.
8-9pm: journal and bed, being up past 9pm is an extreme rarity.
12am- roll into a new sleeping position.
2am- wake up for no reason
3:30 am- wake up to pee
5am- wake up to the sounds of some yelling/calling/screaming animal.
6am- repeat.

As I was typing this i discovered Garfunkel and I will likely be seeking my former neighbor/ family friend Bruce tucker for dinner!
If the following pictures communicate anything, its how wonderful life is right now.
Pictured: the 2nd largest tree on the AT, the Audie Murphy memorial (most decorated American in WWII), dragons tooth, us crossing a river on a cable pulley to "the captains" for a place to camp and soda, fellow hiker Oz looking like Quasimodo in his massive poncho, McAfee Knob, Tinker Cliffs, a lot of views, and a handful of Garfunkel hiking.

  1. Great post Kyle! I'm especially fond of the daily schedule. Looks like a great time. :)
Good pics as usual! The one of Ty sitting on the ledge is getting a pretty good response on Facebook.
Stay safe, and I look forward to your next update!
